3 - Thats the magic number

Basel sits in the north west of Switzerland, with borders to France and Germany and so it was fitting that the first event I took part in was the Dreilanderlauf - 3 country run. Starting and finishing in the picturesque Marktplatz, the route took us into France where there were small cries of "Allez, Allez" into Germany and back along the Rhine.
Its a small friendly event, starting at the relatively late time of 11am which meant the temperature was hot and taking fluid at each of the four water stations was required.
In fact the route has very little shade, especially in the open green areas around Laguna sports ground over the German border. Once on the Lange Erlen, its a nice run along the river beneath the trees before meeting the Rhine and looking ahead to the now daunting prospect of running up Wettsteinbrucke. This bridge provides good acceleration for free wheeling over the river on a bike, but after 20km it looms ahead like a cliff face.
The route just touches Munsterplatz before diving downhill towards the finish. On this last stretch, a good finish line race begins with another runner, I expected to do well here on the downhill, being taller and still feeling good, however he kept the sprint up and accelerated away. Always good to finish on a high, and we congratulate each other afterwards.
Pleased with a 1hr 35m 45s, and a great a celebratory strawberry cake in the market place afterwards.
